Bone Broth

Bone Broth has many fantastic properties. It is a great source of amino acids, minerals, collagen, and gelatin. It aids in healing the digestive tract, decreases inflammation, improves immunity, and promotes the healing of bones, joints, and connective tissues. Additionally, bone broth can assist with weight loss by providing a sense of fullness.

Bone Broth is easy to make using an Instant Pot, pressure cooker, or hot pot. The Instant Pot is particularly convenient as it reduces the cooking time from 24 hours to 4 hours. One batch of bone broth can last a few days and can also be frozen for easy access.

For those who prefer to purchase bone broth, there are several organic brands available in health food stores, both on the shelf and in the freezer. There are also organic "bone broth powders" available online and in stores. Ensure that the product is organic.

Ingredients:

  • Whole Chicken or Turkey, or carcass after roasting/carving. Alternatively, beef/buffalo/lamb bones can be used. Make sure they are organic and pastured.
  • 4+ quarts purified water
  • 2 tbsp raw apple cider vinegar
  • 3 medium yellow onions, cut into quarters
  • 4 organic carrots, chopped
  • 4 organic celery stalks
  • 3 fresh bay leaves
  • Fresh thyme, rosemary, and sage (1-2 sprigs of each)
  • Himalayan sea salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: ginger, garlic, turmeric. Additional veggies like parsnip, burdock, rutabaga if desired.

Bone Broth Directions:

  1. If using a whole chicken/turkey, cut it in half lengthwise and place it in a large deep pot. Alternatively, if using the carcass only or 4-5 bones, follow the same directions.
  2. Add all remaining ingredients to the pot and fill it with purified water all the way to the top.
  3. Allow the pot and its contents to stand for 30 minutes, allowing the raw apple cider vinegar to draw minerals out of the bones.
  4. Turn the heat to high and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 1 ½ to 2 hours or until the chicken meat reaches a temperature of 165 degrees.
  5. Remove the chicken from the pot, debone it, and keep the meat for consumption.
  6. Strain the liquid and discard the vegetables/herbs.
  7. If using a crockpot, place all ingredients in the crockpot and cook on low for 6-8 hours or until the chicken reaches a temperature of 165 degrees.
  8. If using an Instant Pot, cook on high for 2-4 hours (longer for a darker broth) or on low like a crockpot for 6-8 hours.
  9. Always strain the bone broth before storing. The 'Bone Broth' refers to the liquid. If desired, remove the fat from the top once it cools.
  10. Use the bone broth to make soups, stews, or pour it over veggies. Many people enjoy bone broth in the morning as a substitute for coffee.

Drink and enjoy!
